Physiotherapy Program

The Physiotherapy Program provides services to children (birth to school entry) who have difficulty with movement skills, such as delayed motor milestones, a diagnosis that impacts on the development of gross motor skills, or risk for developmental delays due to environmental or genetic factors.

Physiotherapists use community-based, family-centered intervention to assist children in developing the skills necessary to participate as independently as possible in everyday activities. Services may be provided in the home, preschool or other community setting, or at the centre, and include assessment, treatment, consultation and education. Recommendations are made in terms of specific activities to facilitate motor development, appropriate recreational activities, equipment, environmental adaptations and other assistive devices.

Examples of movement difficulties or risk factors include:

- Traumatic birth history or prematurity.

- Signs (or risk) of delayed or abnormal development.

- Diagnosed developmental delay.

- Neurological, genetic or orthopaedic disorders.

 -Cardiorespiratory conditions.

- Abnormal muscle tone ("stiff" or "floppy").

- Asymmetry of movement.

- Sudden change in movement ability.

- Poor strength, endurance, balance or coordination.
